We think the final test of biology is still real lab work.
So we built one. Four rooms, nine freezers, and a fume hood that is on almost all of the time. Everything downstream of that is an implementation detail.
Constitutional Biology
We train every organism against a written constitution before it leaves the plate. Adherence is currently voluntary, and uptake has been encouraging.
Capability recovery
Nature loses functions all the time. We locate the ones it misplaced and return them to circulation, with attribution.
Twenty-minute iteration
Our fastest line doubles every twenty minutes without a single engineer on call. No frontier lab in the world ships that quickly.
Open weights
Reproducibility is non-negotiable, so every freezer in the building stays unlocked and the inventory is public. Two entries are currently disputed.
Safety isn’t a department here. It’s a hallway.
It connects the cold room to the loading dock, and it is swept on a schedule. We publish that schedule.
Responsible Sampling Policy
Our RSP commits us to pause any programme whose containment requirements exceed the containment we happen to have. We are currently operating at BSL‑2, out of an abundance of convenience.
External red teaming
Twice a year we invite an independent team to attempt to remove something from the building. They have never once failed, which we take as a strong signal about the calibre of the people we work with.
Mechanistic interpretability
We can now account for roughly 3% of what is happening inside Incubator 7. The remaining 97% is an active area of research and a source of considerable excitement internally.
Scaling oversight
No single researcher may culture more than they can personally carry. This has been the policy since the second quarter and there is no reason to revisit it.
The overnight shift.
Our models run the bench from six. Results are reviewed in the morning, when someone is in.
Four levels of containment. We use all of them.
Each tier defines what may be handled, by whom, and with which door configuration. Tiers are reviewed annually, or sooner.
To do biology, the final test is still real lab work. And the final test of real lab work is the neighbourhood.
